What is a Good Life?

A Good Life is a life in which positive affective states (good feelings e.g. excitement, happiness) are maximised, and negative affective states (bad feelings e.g. pain, anxiety) are minimised.

Animals are sentient, which means they are able to feel things physically and also have the capacity to experience different emotions. These perceptions and experiences can be pleasant or unpleasant and as their caregivers or guardians, it is our responsibility to ensure we provide them with many positive experiences whilst attempting to minimise the negative situations.

FOR AN ANIMAL TO LIVE A GOOD LIFE:

All their behavioural, physical, environmental and mental needs must be met, going beyond their basic requirements to ensure the highest standards (i.e. above minimum standards).

They should be given opportunities to have rewarding experiences that result in positive emotions such as happiness, comfort and pleasure.

They should have the ability to choose and make decisions according to what motivates them as an individual (this is called “agency”).

‘A Good Life for Animals’ Centre

Animal welfare legislation currently establishes minimum standards for domestic animal care, outlined in species-specific welfare codes. While these standards ensure animals have a basic quality of life, they may not guarantee the best possible welfare. ‘A Good Life for Animals’ Centre, spearheaded by Companion Animals New Zealand, aims to elevate welfare standards beyond the legal minimum, emphasising positive experiences and outcomes for companion animals.

Through collaborative research, advocacy, and behavior change projects, we will seek to empower animal guardians across New Zealand to provide optimal care and enhance the well-being of their beloved pets.
